Curing lamp & stand consists of pressurized, sealed envelope containing gasses and/or metals   with two electrodes, one at either end. A pulse of high voltage arcs the gap between the electrodes, (in early arc lamps the light emitting plasma was noted as bowing upwards in a curve or an arc, hence the name arc lamp).  Heat from the arc vaporizes gases and/or metals in the envelope forming a plasma. This plasma generates light and UV energy.
